Texas Sports History

Texas pro sports identity goes back further than most fans realize. The Houston Colt 45's debuted in 1962 as MLB's expansion entry into Texas, playing three seasons under that name before rebranding to the Astros in 1965. The Houston Aeros of the WHA (1972–1978) won back-to-back Avco World Trophies in 1974 and 1975 with Gordie Howe playing alongside his sons Mark and Marty — one of the most legendary stories in pro hockey. The Fort Worth Black Panthers (also Wonders) competed in the early Negro Leagues, building a Texas baseball legacy that connects directly to the broader Black baseball story.
