About the New York Black Yankees

The New York Black Yankees played in the Negro National League from 1936 through 1948, providing African-American baseball fans in New York with a hometown team during the era of segregated baseball. The team rented Yankee Stadium when the white Yankees were on the road — a striking image of segregated sports — as well as smaller home parks throughout the metro area.

Owned by entertainer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson and James "Soldier Boy" Semler, the Black Yankees never won a NNL pennant but rostered notable Negro Leagues talent over the years. The franchise folded after the 1948 season as MLB integration accelerated and Negro Leagues attendance dropped.
