About the Kansas City Monarchs

The Kansas City Monarchs were the most successful franchise in Negro Leagues baseball history. Founded in 1920 as a charter member of the Negro National League, the Monarchs played continuously into the 1960s — longer than any other Negro Leagues team — and won 12 league pennants and two Negro League World Series titles along the way. They were the New York Yankees of Black baseball: deep, well-run, and stocked with talent that would have starred in the major leagues if not for the color line.

The Monarchs roster reads like a who's who of Cooperstown. Pitcher Satchel Paige spent the prime of his career in Kansas City and is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers ever to throw a baseball. First baseman Buck O'Neil — later the franchise's manager — became a beloved ambassador of Negro Leagues history and a driving force behind the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. Outfielders Cool Papa Bell, Willard Brown and Turkey Stearnes all played for the Monarchs at points in their careers, while pitcher Hilton Smith, catcher Frank Duncan, and shortstop Newt Allen anchored countless great squads.

Most famously, a young Jackie Robinson played the 1945 season at shortstop for the Monarchs before being signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers — a move that broke baseball's color barrier two years later. The Monarchs also helped develop Ernie Banks, Elston Howard and other future big-leaguers in the years following integration. Long after the original Negro Leagues faded, the Monarchs name has been revived in independent ball as part of the American Association, keeping the tradition alive in Kansas City. The Royal Retros NLB Monarchs collection honors every era of that history with apparel for collectors, vintage-baseball fans and anyone who values one of the most important franchises in American sports history.
