About the Houston Gamblers

The Houston Gamblers entered the United States Football League in 1984 as one of the most exciting expansion teams in spring-football history. Owned by Dr. Jerry Argovitz and playing home games at the Astrodome, the Gamblers introduced a frenetic version of the run-and-shoot offense — designed and called by offensive coordinator Mouse Davis — that revolutionized professional football and outscored every other team in the league. They built around a rookie quarterback named Jim Kelly out of Miami, who chose the Gamblers over the NFL's Buffalo Bills (who had drafted him in the first round).

Kelly was the perfect run-and-shoot trigger man. He threw for 5,219 yards and 44 touchdowns in 1984 — at the time, both pro-football single-season records — and the Gamblers offense averaged more than 35 points per game. Receivers Richard Johnson and Ricky Sanders, plus running back Sam Harrell, all put up gaudy numbers. Houston went 13-5 and won the Central Division before losing a wild playoff game.

The 1985 Gamblers continued to score in bunches before the league folded after 1985. Kelly went on to become a Pro Football Hall of Famer with the Bills, while many other Gamblers (Sanders most notably) had long NFL careers. The Gamblers name was revived for the 2022 USFL relaunch, giving Houston fans a chance to enjoy spring football again, though the modern team has since been dissolved by the UFL merger.
