North Carolina Sports History

The Carolina Cougars (1969–1974) are the cornerstone of North Carolina's pro sports past. Originally the Houston Mavericks, the Cougars relocated and embraced the entire state — playing home games rotated across Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh. They drafted future stars and became one of the ABA's signature franchises before relocating again. The Charlotte Sting became one of the eight original WNBA franchises in 1997 and competed in two WNBA Finals before folding in 2006. The Charlotte Hornets of the WFL gave the city pro football in 1974–75. The Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks competed in the WLAF's inaugural 1991 season.
