The Carolina Cougars were established as the Houston Mavericks, a charter member of the ABA. They moved to North Carolina in 1969. Tom Meschery coached the team in 1971 and after retiring as a player, Larry Brown took over the following season. The Cougars were touted as a "regional" team, playing home games in three cities: Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh, North Carolina. Game 7 of the Eastern Division Finals was played in Charlotte instead of Greensboro where the team won Games 2 and 5. Following the loss, many questioned the decision and the team never made another deep playoff run. They became the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974.
