The Houston Thunderbears played six seasons in the AFL from 1996 to 2001 at the Compaq Center (formerly The Summit). The franchise had previously played as the Memphis Pharaohs (1994–1995) and Texas Terror (1996) before settling on the Thunderbears name and Houston market.

The Thunderbears reached the AFL playoffs multiple times during their Houston run before folding after the 2001 season as the AFL transitioned into the AFL II era. Houston would later return to arena football through the AF2 and other minor-league franchises.
