About the Houston Roughnecks

The Houston Roughnecks are one of the original eight franchises of the relaunched XFL — they took the field for the 2020 spring season and instantly became the league's flag-bearer. The Roughnecks went 5-0 to start the 2020 campaign before COVID-19 ended the season early, with quarterback P.J. Walker leading a high-scoring offense and head coach June Jones calling plays from the run-and-shoot tradition. Houston, a city with deep football roots and a long history of supporting alternative leagues (USFL Gamblers, World Football League Texans), embraced the Roughnecks immediately.

When the XFL paused and re-launched in 2023 under new ownership, the Roughnecks returned with retooled rosters and continued to play home games at TDECU Stadium on the University of Houston campus, later branded as Space City Field. After the XFL and USFL merged to form the United Football League for the 2024 season, the Roughnecks were retained as one of the league's marquee franchises and have continued to compete and draw consistent crowds.
