The Austin Ice Bats brought professional hockey to the Texas state capital in 1996, joining the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) as a founding franchise. When the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League (CHL) in 2001, the Ice Bats continued in the expanded CHL for seven more seasons. The franchise played at the Travis County Expo Center, a rodeo-style venue that gave the Ice Bats one of the most distinctive home settings in 1990s–2000s minor pro hockey.

The Ice Bats built passionate Austin crowds across their twelve-season run and developed a cult-favorite identity built around their distinctive bat-themed logo. Financial pressures and arena issues forced the franchise to fold after the 2007–08 season, ending Austin's longest professional hockey chapter to date.
