About the Dallas Chaparrals
The Chaparrals were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in 1967, owned by a consortium led by Bob Folsom (later Dallas mayor) and coached initially by Cliff Hagan. They played their home games at Moody Coliseum and Memorial Auditorium and built rosters around John Beasley, Cliff Hagan (player-coach), and later Donnie Freeman, Glen Combs, Cincy Powell, and Steve Jones.
Across six Dallas seasons the Chaparrals reached the ABA playoffs five times, winning a Western Division regular-season title in 1968–69 but never advancing past the conference finals. Tom Nissalke coached them in their final years. Despite competitive teams, attendance was poor in a Cowboys-mad Dallas, and ownership leased the franchise to a San Antonio group for the 1973–74 season as the "Texas Chaparrals" — a one-year experiment that became the permanent move when the team rebranded as the San Antonio Spurs in 1974. The Spurs eventually won five NBA championships. The Chaparrals throwbacks honor the franchise's Dallas roots.
