About the Dallas Texans — Two Franchises, One Name

The 1952 Dallas Texans were one of the strangest franchises in NFL history: the New York Yanks were sold to a Dallas group, played a single dismal 1–11 season at the Cotton Bowl, were taken back over by the league after the owners surrendered the franchise mid-season, and then relocated to Baltimore where they became the Baltimore Colts. Hall of Famers Art Donovan and Gino Marchetti both played for the Texans in 1952; few teams have produced a higher percentage of Hall of Famers per game than that lone Dallas season.

The 1960–1963 AFL Dallas Texans were a different story entirely. Founded by Lamar Hunt as one of the original eight AFL teams, coached by Hank Stram, and quarterbacked by Cotton Davidson and later Len Dawson, the Texans won the 1962 AFL Championship in a famous double-overtime game against the Houston AFL franchise. Forced into the same market as the expansion NFL Cowboys, Hunt moved the team to Kansas City after the 1962 title and rebranded as the Chiefs. Both Dallas Texans franchises live on through Royal Retros throwbacks.
