What Were the Sacramento Surge?

The Sacramento Surge were a professional American football team based in Sacramento, California, that played the two seasons of the original World League of American Football, in 1991 and 1992. The Surge are remembered as champions: in 1992 they went 8–2 — tied for the best record in the league — and won World Bowl II, giving Sacramento a professional football title before the NFL suspended the World League after that season.

Led by quarterback David Archer, the Surge ran one of the most explosive offenses in the league and peaked at exactly the right time, delivering a championship in what turned out to be the final game of the WLAF's original run.

The Sacramento Surge Era-by-Era History

1991 — The Inaugural Season. Sacramento was one of the World League's founding North American franchises in 1991, bringing spring pro football to California's capital. The Surge were competitive in year one and built the core that would win it all the next season.

1992 — The Championship Season. Everything came together. Behind David Archer — who led the WLAF with 2,964 passing yards and 23 touchdowns in just ten games — the Surge went 8–2 and tied the Orlando Thunder for the best record in the league.

June 6, 1992 — World Bowl II. At Montreal's Olympic Stadium, the Surge met the Orlando Thunder for the title. Trailing 17–6 entering the fourth quarter, Archer engineered a furious rally, throwing two touchdown passes to lead Sacramento to a 21–17 comeback win and the championship. Archer was named World Bowl MVP.

The End of the Original WLAF. The NFL suspended the World League in September 1992, making the Surge's title the final championship of the league's initial run. When the league relaunched as a Europe-only competition in 1995, Sacramento did not return — leaving the Surge as undefeated champions in the memory of their fans.

World Bowl II — Archer's Comeback in Montreal

The Surge's championship is a classic comeback. Down 17–6 in the fourth quarter of World Bowl II at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, quarterback David Archer threw two touchdown passes to rally Sacramento past the Orlando Thunder 21–17.
