                  The Surge began play as a charter member of the World League of American Football in 1991. Kay Stephenson served as head coach, while the team featured an all-star announcing crew of Jack Youngblood, Ronnie Lott, and long time 49ers announcer Joe Starkey. The Surge won a championship in their second season, but the league was suspended soon after. In 1993, the team joined the Canadian league as the Gold Miners, becoming the first US based team in that circuit.
