What Was the Montreal Machine?
The Montreal Machine were a professional American football team based in Montreal, Quebec, that played the two seasons of the original World League of American Football, in 1991 and 1992. Playing in the cavernous Olympic Stadium, the Machine were Canada's entry in the WLAF and one of the league's most distinctive franchises, bilingual home of spring gridiron in Quebec.
The Montreal Machine Era-by-Era History
1991 — The Inaugural Season. Montreal joined the World League as one of its founding North American franchises, bringing American football to the Olympic Stadium that had hosted the 1976 Summer Games.
1992 — Hosting the World Bowl. The Machine finished 2–8 and missed the playoffs, a disappointment for fans who had hoped to see the team reach the World Bowl on home turf. Instead, Olympic Stadium hosted World Bowl II between the Sacramento Surge and Orlando Thunder that June.
The End of the Original WLAF. The NFL suspended the World League after 1992, and the Machine folded with the rest of the league's North American clubs.
The Venue — Olympic Stadium
The Machine played at Montreal's Olympic Stadium, the landmark domed venue built for the 1976 Olympics. Its enormous capacity made it one of the biggest stages in the league — and the host site for the 1992 World Bowl.
