What Were the London Monarchs?
The London Monarchs were a professional American football team based in London that played in the World League of American Football beginning in 1991 and in the relaunched NFL Europe through 1998 (latterly as the England Monarchs). They are best remembered as the inaugural World Bowl champions: in their debut 1991 season the Monarchs went 9–1, packed crowds of more than 40,000 into Wembley Stadium, and won World Bowl I in front of 61,108 fans — the largest crowd and the only shutout in the history of the championship game.
For British sports fans, the Monarchs were the face of an American football boom that swept the UK in the early 1990s. No team did more to popularize gridiron in Britain.
The London Monarchs Era-by-Era History
1991 — The Perfect Debut. London was a founding World League franchise and an instant phenomenon. The Monarchs finished the regular season 9–1, won the European division, and rolled to the title. Their lone defeat had come at home to the Barcelona Dragons, 20–17, in the final week — and they avenged it in style.
June 9, 1991 — World Bowl I. Before 61,108 fans at Wembley Stadium, the Monarchs blanked the Barcelona Dragons 21–0 to win the first World Bowl. It remains the only shutout in World Bowl history and the largest crowd the game ever drew — the crowning moment of British American football.
1992 — The Original WLAF Closes. The Monarchs played a second WLAF season before the NFL suspended the league after 1992. London went dormant with the rest of the circuit.
1995–1997 — The NFL Europe Revival. When the league relaunched, the Monarchs returned to Wembley as one of the anchor franchises, though they never recaptured the magic of 1991.
1998 — The England Monarchs. In a final bid to broaden the fan base, the team rebranded as the England Monarchs and played home games at venues around the country. It was the franchise's last season; London left the league afterward.
World Bowl I — The Shutout at Wembley
The Monarchs' defining moment is also one of the defining moments of the entire World League. A 21–0 shutout of the Barcelona Dragons in front of more than 61,000 fans at Wembley made London the first champions of professional spring football's global experiment — and produced a result no other World Bowl ever matched. A Royal Retros Monarchs throwback is, more than anything, a tribute to that perfect afternoon.
The Venue — Wembley Stadium
The Monarchs played at the original Wembley Stadium, the most famous sports venue in Britain. Hosting — and winning — the first World Bowl beneath the Twin Towers gave the franchise an iconic home and a championship backdrop unmatched in league history.
