The London Monarchs were one of the original ten franchises of the WLAF / NFL Europe in 1991 and captured the inaugural World Bowl I that same year, defeating the Barcelona Dragons 21–0 at Wembley Stadium in front of more than 60,000 fans. The 1991 title made London the first European city to win a championship in American professional football.

The Monarchs played out of Wembley through 1997, then relaunched as the England Monarchs for 1998 and 1999 — touring home games to Bristol, Birmingham, and other English cities. The franchise was disbanded after the 1999 season as NFL Europe consolidated to mainland European markets, ending one of the league's flagship clubs.
