What Were the Barcelona Dragons?
The Barcelona Dragons were a professional American football team based in Barcelona, Spain, that played in the World League of American Football in 1991 and 1992, then in the league's European revival as NFL Europe from 1995 to 2003. Across eleven seasons the Dragons reached the World Bowl four times — in 1991, 1997, 1999 and 2001 — winning the championship in 1997. They were the most successful and best-supported southern-European team in the league's history and the franchise most responsible for building an American football culture in Spain.
Barcelona played its home games at the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc, the stadium built for the 1992 Olympic Games, and later at the Mini Estadi. The team's championship and its run of title-game appearances made it one of the defining clubs of the World League era.
The Barcelona Dragons Era-by-Era History
1991 — The First World Bowl. Barcelona was one of the World League's ten founding franchises in 1991 and immediately reached the inaugural World Bowl, falling to the London Monarchs 21–0 at Wembley in the only shutout in World Bowl history. The Dragons finished 8–2 and announced themselves as a power.
1992 — The Original WLAF Closes. The Dragons remained competitive in the league's second season, but the NFL suspended the World League after 1992. The franchise went dormant along with the rest of the circuit.
1995 — The Revival. When the league relaunched as a Europe-only competition in 1995, Barcelona was back, one of the anchor franchises of the new NFL Europe.
1997 — The Championship. The Dragons' crowning night. Before 31,100 fans at the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc on June 22, 1997, quarterback Jon Kitna threw for 401 yards and two touchdowns to lead Barcelona past the Rhein Fire 38–24 in World Bowl '97. Kitna was named MVP, and the Dragons had their title.
1999 & 2001 — Back to the World Bowl. Barcelona returned to the championship game twice more, losing World Bowl '99 to the Frankfurt Galaxy and World Bowl 2001 to the Berlin Thunder. Few teams in league history reached the title game as often.
2003 — The Final Season. After the 2003 campaign, the Dragons were discontinued and replaced in the league by the Cologne Centurions. Barcelona's eleven-season run remains one of the great stories of European gridiron.
The 1997 Championship — Kitna's Night at Montjuïc
World Bowl '97 is the centerpiece of Dragons history. Quarterback Jon Kitna — who would go on to a 15-year NFL career — delivered a 401-yard, two-touchdown MVP performance, completing 23 of 31 passes to beat the Rhein Fire 38–24 in front of a passionate home crowd at the Olympic Stadium. It was Spain's championship, and it remains the high-water mark of American football in the country. A Royal Retros Dragons throwback is, above all, a tribute to that night.
Famous Players Who Wore the Dragons
As an NFL developmental club, Barcelona moved talent on to the NFL. The most famous: Jon Kitna, the 1997 World Bowl MVP who launched a long NFL quarterback career with the Seahawks, Bengals, Lions and Cowboys after his time in Spain. Customize a Dragons jersey with his name — or your own — for a true deep cut.
The Venue — Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc
The Dragons played their biggest games at the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc, the grand stadium built for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, perched on the hill overlooking the city. Hosting World Bowl '97 there gave the franchise one of the most striking championship backdrops in league history. The team later also used the Mini Estadi.
