The Sun City Rays were charter members of the Senior Professional Baseball Association — the same retired-major-leaguer winter league that produced the West Palm Beach Tropics, St. Petersburg Pelicans, and other SPBA franchises. The Rays played in the SPBA's brief run in the minor leagues (1989–90, with a partial 1990–91 season cut short by financial collapse).

Sun City, Arizona — a planned retirement community northwest of Phoenix — was a fitting home for the senior pro circuit. Notable Rays players reflected the SPBA's roster pattern: All-Star-caliber veterans and longtime journeymen looking for one more chance to play organized ball.
