The Anaheim Piranhas played two seasons in the AFL from 1996 to 1997 at the Arrowhead Pond, the same building used by the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. The Piranhas were part of the AFL's continued expansion into Southern California after the LA Cobras' single 1988 season.
The franchise folded after 1997 as the AFL consolidated its Southern California presence. Anaheim's AFL chapter set the stage for the later Los Angeles Avengers, who became one of the prominent AFL II-era franchises during the 2000s.
