About the Washington Federals

The Federals were one of the USFL's twelve original franchises in 1983, owned by Washington attorney Berl Bernhard and coached by Ray Jauch. With Mike Hohensee at quarterback and dynamic receiver Joey Walters as the team's best offensive weapon, the Federals were supposed to give the nation's capital a viable spring alternative to the NFL's Redskins. They opened by losing six games in a row, finished 4–14, and consistently drew under 14,000 to RFK Stadium — the worst attendance in the league.

The 1984 season was even rougher. Coach Dick Bielski took over, but the Federals went 3–15 and again finished last in the East. Walters led the league in receptions but had little support. Bernhard sold the franchise after 1984 and the team relocated to Florida as the Orlando Renegades for 1985. Despite the on-field misery, the Federals merchandise has aged into something fans actively seek out — a charmingly bad team in a charmingly doomed league, in a city that has always loved its underdogs.
