The Washington Federals were a charter member of the original USFL, playing two seasons at RFK Stadium before relocating to Orlando as the Renegades in 1985. Coached by Ray Jauch and quarterbacked by Mike Hohensee and then Kim McQuilken, the club struggled on the field, going 4–14 in 1983 and 3–15 in 1984.
The roster's best-known name was running back Craig James, a USFL territorial pick out of SMU who went on to a Pro Bowl career after the league folded. Despite the losing record, the Federals demonstrated a viable spring-football audience in the capital, and their move to Orlando became one of the league's defining relocations heading into 1985.
