This collection is the modern United Football League, founded in 2024 out of the USFL–XFL merger. There was an entirely separate and unrelated United Football League that played in the fall from 2009 to 2012 — Las Vegas Locomotives, Florida Tuskers, Virginia Destroyers, Omaha Nighthawks, Hartford Colonials, Sacramento Mountain Lions. What Is the UFL?

The United Football League is the top professional spring football league in the United States. It launched in 2024 as the merged successor to two rival leagues — the XFL and the USFL — that had spent 2022 and 2023 competing for the same players, the same television windows and the same relatively small audience of people who want football in April. Rather than let both bleed out, the two ownership groups combined. The result is an eight-team league that plays a ten-week regular season from late March into early June, with a playoff and a championship game called the United Bowl.

The UFL is not a developmental affiliate of the National Football League, and it is not a minor league in any formal sense. It is an independent professional league with its own rules, its own broadcast deals with FOX and ESPN, its own collective bargaining agreement with the United Football Players Association, and its own owners — a group that includes FOX Corporation, RedBird Capital Partners, ESPN, Dany Garcia and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, joined in July 2025 by beverage entrepreneur Mike Repole through his firm Impact Capital. Garcia serves as chairperson; Russ Brandon is president and CEO; Repole runs the league's business operations.

What it functions as, in practice, is the most credible on-ramp to the NFL that exists outside of college football. By mid-August 2026 the league had passed 50 NFL signings out of its 2026 rosters alone. That is the pitch, and it is the reason UFL rosters are full of players whose names NFL fans half-recognize — a fourth-round pick who never quite stuck, a productive Group of Five quarterback who went undrafted, a special-teams ace working his way back from an injury year.

How the UFL Got Here — The 2024 USFL–XFL Merger

By the end of the 2023 season the math had stopped working for everybody. The XFL, relaunched in 2020 by Vince McMahon, had collapsed into bankruptcy after five games when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down American sports, and had been bought out of that bankruptcy by Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and RedBird Capital for roughly $15 million. It returned in 2023 with eight teams. The USFL, revived by FOX Sports in 2022 under the historic 1980s name, was in its second season with eight teams of its own. Two spring leagues, sixteen teams, two sets of stadium leases, two broadcast operations, and one audience.

On September 28, 2023, the two leagues announced their intent to merge. Federal regulators cleared the transaction in November 2023, and the deal closed on December 31, 2023. On January 1, 2024, the combined entity was named the United Football League.

The merger was brutally efficient about which franchises survived. The XFL contributed four: the DC Defenders, the St. Louis Battlehawks, the Arlington Renegades and the San Antonio Brahmas. The USFL contributed four: the Birmingham Stallions, the Houston Roughnecks, the Memphis Showboats and the Michigan Panthers. Four USFL clubs were shuttered outright: the New Jersey Generals, the Philadelphia Stars, the Pittsburgh Maulers and the Tampa Bay Bandits. Four XFL clubs went with them, the Seattle Sea Dragons among them.

Note the wrinkle in the Houston case, because it matters if you collect: the Houston franchise that survived the merger kept the XFL Roughnecks name, history and social accounts, even though the USFL had also fielded a Houston team, the Gamblers. Two Houston identities went into 2024 and one came out — and then, in 2026, the league handed the name back the other way.

The first UFL game was played on March 30, 2024, and the league chose the matchup deliberately: the Arlington Renegades, 2023 XFL champions, against the Birmingham Stallions, 2023 USFL champions. Two title-holders from two dead leagues, opening the one that replaced them.

Season by Season — 2024, 2025 and 2026

2024 — The Inaugural Season and the Birmingham Three-Peat. The first UFL season ran the eight surviving franchises in two four-team conferences that kept the old brand names alive: an XFL Conference (Renegades, Defenders, Brahmas, Battlehawks) and a USFL Conference (Stallions, Roughnecks, Showboats, Panthers). The championship game was played on June 16, 2024, at The Dome at America's Center in St. Louis in front of 27,396 fans, and it was not close: the Birmingham Stallions shut out the San Antonio Brahmas 25–0, scoring on three consecutive possessions across the second and third quarters to build a 22–0 lead and never letting San Antonio into the game. It was Birmingham's third consecutive spring-football championship — 2022 USFL, 2023 USFL, 2024 UFL — and Skip Holtz became the winningest coach in modern spring football on the strength of it.

2025 — Washington's Turn, and the Highest-Scoring Game in League History. The 2025 season ended on June 14 with the DC Defenders beating the Michigan Panthers 58–34. The Defenders outscored Michigan 31–6 in the second quarter alone. Fifty-eight points is the most any team has scored in a UFL game and the most in the modern era of spring football — it was the first time a UFL team had cleared 50. Defenders quarterback Jordan Ta'amu was named championship game MVP after throwing for a UFL-record 390 yards. Birmingham finished 7–3 and did not win a title for the first time in four springs.

2026 — Everything Changes. The third UFL season looked almost nothing like the first two. Three franchises were gone; three brand-new ones took their place. The two-conference structure was scrapped for a single eight-team table, with the top four teams advancing to a semifinal round. Two surviving teams changed names. The rulebook was rewritten to force offense. And a first-year expansion team won the whole thing.

The Michigan Panthers, Memphis Showboats and San Antonio Brahmas did not return. In their place came the Columbus Aviators at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio; the Louisville Kings at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky; and the Orlando Storm at Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando, Florida. The players and staff under contract to the three departing clubs were transferred to the three new ones — Michigan's to Columbus, Memphis's to Louisville, San Antonio's to Orlando — but the league was explicit that the new franchises are separate entities and do not inherit the records or history of the teams they replaced.

Two legacy franchises were renamed at the same time. The Arlington Renegades became the Dallas Renegades and moved to Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas — restoring the name the team had carried in the 2020 XFL. The Houston Roughnecks became the Houston Gamblers and moved to Shell Energy Stadium, restoring the name the franchise had used in its USFL era. Both moves were part of a deliberate strategy under Repole of putting spring football in smaller, more intimate soccer-specific stadiums in the 15,000–25,000 range rather than half-empty NFL venues.

The 2026 season kicked off on Friday, March 27, 2026, and ran ten weeks to May 31. The playoffs were held June 7, and the 2026 United Bowl was played on June 13, 2026, at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. — a nominally neutral site that happened to be the Defenders' home stadium. The Louisville Kings beat the DC Defenders 27–20 to win the championship in their first season of existence. Kings running back Ian Wheeler was named MVP after rushing for 81 yards on 10 carries, including the 44-yard go-ahead touchdown run that opened the fourth quarter. 50 Cent played the halftime show. Attendance was 19,023.

The path there was one of the strangest in spring-football history. Louisville started 0–3 and then won eight of its last nine. The turning point was a trade: the Kings sent their opening-day starting quarterback, Jason Bean, to DC in exchange for Mike DiLiello, which opened the job for Chandler Rogers, who went 5–1 as the starter. Bean, meanwhile, was DC's third-string quarterback until Jordan Ta'amu tore an ACL in a Week 8 loss to Louisville and a backup faltered — at which point Bean took over and led the Defenders to a semifinal upset of top-seeded Orlando. So the championship game was contested by a team playing its first season ever, against a team quarterbacked by the man that team had traded away. Bean separated a shoulder in the third quarter and was replaced by E.J. Perry, who had been signed on May 25.

The 2026 UFL Teams

• Birmingham Stallions — Protective Stadium, Birmingham, Alabama. Head coach A.J. McCarron. Three-time champions (2022, 2023, 2024). Finished 4–6 in 2026, the first losing season and first playoff miss in franchise history. Will not return in 2027.
• Columbus Aviators — Historic Crew Stadium, Columbus, Ohio. Head coach Ted Ginn Jr., in his first coaching role at any level after 14 NFL seasons as a receiver and return man. Inherited the Michigan Panthers' contracted players.
• Dallas Renegades — Toyota Stadium, Frisco, Texas. Head coach Rick Neuheisel, who succeeded Bob Stoops after Stoops retired in December 2025. 2023 XFL champions under the Arlington name.
• DC Defenders — Audi Field, Washington, D.C. Head coach Shannon Harris, the only head coach who returned to the same team for 2026. 2025 UFL champions; 2026 United Bowl runner-up; 2023 XFL Championship Game runner-up.
• Houston Gamblers — Shell Energy Stadium, Houston, Texas. Head coach Kevin Sumlin. Rebranded from the Houston Roughnecks for 2026. Will not return in 2027.
• Louisville Kings — Lynn Family Stadium, Louisville, Kentucky. Head coach Chris Redman, a nine-year NFL backup quarterback. 2026 UFL champions in their inaugural season, finishing 6–4 and winning eight of their final nine games. Sold out opening night.
• Orlando Storm — Inter&Co Stadium, Orlando, Florida. Head coach Anthony Becht, previously 22–10 over three seasons with the Battlehawks. Finished as the top seed in 2026 before losing the semifinal to DC. Recorded the first regular-season shutout in UFL history, 16–0 over Birmingham in Week 4.
• St. Louis Battlehawks — The Dome at America's Center, St. Louis, Missouri. Head coach Ricky Proehl. Led the UFL in attendance in 2026 at 23,239 per game, more than four times the league's lowest-drawing market.

The Rules That Make the UFL Different

Spring leagues have always used the rulebook as a differentiator, and the UFL leans into it harder than any predecessor. Ahead of the 2026 season the league announced a package of changes explicitly designed to "turbocharge offenses" and improve player safety. The headline items:

• The four-point field goal. Midfield is a "four-point line." Any field goal attempted from 60 or more yards is worth four points instead of three. The rule was pushed personally by Repole and revives a concept from NFL Europe, which awarded four points for kicks of 50-plus. In the 2026 United Bowl, DC's Matt McCrane hit a 61-yarder for four points to cut the deficit to 27–20.
• No punting past midfield. An offense may not punt once the line of scrimmage crosses the 50, except after the two-minute warning. And the prohibition holds even if the offense loses ground — you can't take an intentional penalty, sack or kneel to buy back the right to punt. You have to run a real play.
• Tiered conversions. After a touchdown a team may kick from the 33 for one point, run a play from the two for two points, or run a play from the eight for three points. The one-point kick is new for 2026; previously the UFL required a scrimmage play for every conversion.
• Aggressive touchback math. On the UFL's dynamic kickoff, a ball kicked into the end zone for a touchback gives the receiving team the ball at its own 40. That is a genuine penalty for kicking it out of play, and it forces returns.
• No tush push. The quarterback sneak with teammates physically pushing the pile is banned outright.
• One foot in bounds. A forward pass is complete with one foot down, college-style, restoring the XFL standard.
• Overtime shootout. Alternating single plays from the five-yard line rather than a clocked possession format.

Add the single-table eight-team standings with no conferences or divisions, and the UFL is running a meaningfully different sport than the one on television in the fall. That is the entire point.

The Long History of Spring Football — Where the UFL Sits

Nobody has ever made spring professional football work for very long in the United States. The UFL is the ninth serious attempt in just over fifty years, and it is standing on the graves of eight predecessors — most of which Royal Retros carries.

World Football League (1974–1975). The first modern challenger. Gary Davidson, who had already founded the ABA and the WHA, launched the WFL with twelve teams, a fall schedule and a strategy of raiding the NFL for stars — most famously signing Miami Dolphins Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick and Paul Warfield to future contracts mid-season. The league invented the "action point" and moved the goalposts to the back of the end zone, a change the NFL adopted. United States Football League (1983–1985). The most important of them all, and the direct ancestor of the modern league by name. The original USFL played spring football for three seasons with genuine star power — Herschel Walker with the New Jersey Generals, Jim Kelly with the Houston Gamblers, Steve Young with the Los Angeles Express, Reggie White with the Memphis Showboats, Doug Flutie, Mike Rozier, Kelvin Bryant. It had real coaches, real crowds and real television. Then it voted to move to a fall schedule and sue the NFL for antitrust — winning the case and being awarded one dollar, trebled to three. The league never played another down. Its team names live on: Stallions, Panthers, Showboats, Gamblers, Generals, Bandits. Shop the USFL collection.

World League of American Football / NFL Europe (1991–1992, 1995–2007). The NFL's own spring experiment, initially transatlantic with teams in North America and Europe, later Europe-only. It ran longer than every other spring league combined and produced Kurt Warner, Adam Vinatieri, Jake Delhomme, Dante Hall and hundreds of others. It also gave the UFL the four-point field goal.

XFL, first version (2001). Vince McMahon and NBC's single-season collaboration. Enormous ratings for the first week, catastrophic ratings by the fourth, and a cancellation after the championship game. It contributed the skycam and the mic'd-up sideline to the mainstream broadcast vocabulary.

United Football League, original (2009–2012). The fall alternative for markets without NFL teams — Las Vegas Locomotives, Florida Tuskers, Hartford Colonials, California Redwoods/Sacramento Mountain Lions, Omaha Nighthawks, Virginia Destroyers. Las Vegas won the first two titles, Virginia the third. The league suspended operations partway through 2012 and never resumed. It shares a name with the current league and absolutely nothing else. Alliance of American Football (2019). Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian's eight-team spring league, which drew strong reviews and a promising debut audience before running out of money and shutting down eight weeks into a ten-week season. Players learned it was over when they were told to leave the hotel. Shop the AAF collection.

XFL, second version (2020). McMahon's relaunch, and by consensus the best-executed spring league since the original USFL — good rules, good broadcasts, real crowds in St. Louis and Seattle. It played five weeks before COVID-19 shut it down, then filed for bankruptcy. Garcia, Johnson and RedBird bought the assets. Shop the XFL collection.

USFL, revived (2022–2023). FOX Sports resurrected the USFL brand with eight teams, initially playing every game in Birmingham as a cost-control measure before expanding to multiple hub cities. Birmingham won both championships.

XFL, third version (2023). The Garcia/Johnson/RedBird relaunch, eight teams, won by the Arlington Renegades.

United Football League (2024–present). The merger. Which is to say: for the first time since 1985, there is exactly one spring football league instead of two or zero, and it has a broadcast deal with both FOX and ESPN, a players' union, and a stated plan to reach sixteen teams by 2035.

Quarterbacks. Alex McGough was the 2023 USFL MVP for Birmingham. Luis Perez has quarterbacked in nearly every spring league of the modern era. Chandler Rogers took over a winless Louisville team in 2026 and went 5–1 as its starter on the way to a championship. Jason Bean, the first overall pick of the 2024 UFL draft, played for both 2026 finalists in the same season. Max Duggan, Matt Corral and Spencer Sanders have all taken UFL snaps after college careers that drew national attention.

Skill players. Ian Wheeler was the 2026 United Bowl MVP on a 44-yard fourth-quarter touchdown run. James Robinson, a 1,000-yard NFL rusher with Jacksonville, added the clinching score in the same game. Hakeem Butler, Denzel Mims, Amari Rodgers, Cornell Powell, Jaydon Mickens, Deon Cain, Lynn Bowden and Trenton Cannon have all put NFL résumés into UFL uniforms. Marquette King, the most entertaining punter of his NFL generation, has punted in this league — though under the 2026 rules he gets fewer chances.

Coaches. Skip Holtz is the winningest coach in modern spring-football history, with three championships across the USFL and UFL at Birmingham before stepping away in December 2025. Bob Stoops — the first head coach hired by either predecessor league — coached the Renegades to the 2023 XFL title and retired in December 2025. Wade Phillips, a former NFL head coach and Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator, ran San Antonio. The 2026 coaching class was a deliberate turn toward name recognition and local roots: Ted Ginn Jr. in Columbus, Chris Redman in Louisville, Anthony Becht in Orlando, Kevin Sumlin in Houston, Rick Neuheisel in Dallas, Ricky Proehl in St. Louis, and A.J. McCarron in Birmingham, who left a run for Alabama lieutenant governor to take the job.

What's Next for the UFL

On July 30, 2026, the league announced that the Birmingham Stallions and Houston Gamblers will not return for the 2027 season, describing the move as a strategic market realignment. Both decisions came down to buildings and gate. Birmingham's Protective Stadium seats 47,100; the Stallions averaged 8,248 in 2026, and a Week 7 crowd of 4,705 sat in a stadium built for more than ten times that. Houston averaged 5,683, last in the league, even after the rebrand and the move to a smaller venue. The league's stated target is 10,000–15,000 fans in a stadium that holds 15,000–25,000 — full houses in small buildings rather than empty ones in large.

Two replacement markets are expected for 2027 and have not been named. Oklahoma City is already confirmed for 2028, at the MAPS 4 Multipurpose Stadium, taking the league to ten teams. Repole has publicly floated Austin, Salt Lake City, Omaha, Albuquerque and — with a raised eyebrow — New York City as candidates. The long-range stated target is sixteen teams by 2035.

What that means for anyone buying gear: the UFL's team map changes every single year, and franchises disappear from the field with about eight months' notice. Birmingham's collection is now a closing chapter. Michigan, Memphis and San Antonio already are. That is not a reason to wait.
