About the Tampa Bay Bandits

The Tampa Bay Bandits were the most fun team in original USFL history. Owned by John Bassett — a Canadian sports impresario who had previously run the WFL Memphis Southmen and CFL Toronto Northmen — the Bandits charmed the Tampa Bay area with a high-flying offense, a memorable bandit-mask logo, and an ownership group that included actor Burt Reynolds. Reynolds attended Bandits games regularly, popped up on the sideline during broadcasts, and helped turn Tampa Stadium into one of the most entertaining gameday environments in spring football.

Quarterback John Reaves and head coach Steve Spurrier (yes, that Steve Spurrier) ran an aggressive passing attack the Tampa media nicknamed "Bandit Ball." Receiver Eric Truvillion led the team in catches in 1983 and again in 1985, while running back Gary Anderson became one of the league's most dynamic offensive weapons after being acquired in 1984. The Bandits made the playoffs all three USFL seasons but never won the championship, and Bassett's failing health (he died of brain cancer in 1986) helped doom the franchise's future as the league collapsed after the 1985 season.

The Bandits' legacy is far bigger than their three-year run. They proved that spring football could draw real Florida crowds, and the bandit-mask logo became one of the most beloved alternative-football marks of the 1980s. The franchise was revived for the 2022 USFL relaunch — bringing the Bandit Ball mystique back to spring football — though the modern Bandits were dissolved by the UFL merger.
