The San Francisco Seals were one of the most successful franchises of the early-1960s Western Hockey League (WHL). Coached briefly by Max McNab and then by Bud Poile, the Seals won back-to-back Lester Patrick Cups in 1962–63 and 1963–64 — the second of which featured a finals series against the Seattle Totems played entirely at the Cow Palace because of scheduling conflicts in Seattle.

The Seals were an immediate hit at the Cow Palace, averaging more than 5,500 fans per game in their inaugural 1961–62 season. The franchise relocated across the bay to the new Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum for the 1966–67 season — rebranding as the California Seals — before being sold to new ownership and transitioning to the major-league level for the 1967–68 season. The Seals' WHL run remains one of the most beloved chapters of Bay Area hockey history.
