The Cincinnati Stingers joined the World Hockey Association (WHA) as an expansion franchise in 1975, playing at Riverfront Coliseum and giving the Queen City its first taste of top-tier professional hockey. Owned by Bill DeWitt and a Cincinnati ownership group, the Stingers built a competitive roster across four seasons in the WHA.

The Stingers' lasting legacy came from their willingness to sign teenage stars who could not yet play in the major professional hockey league due to age restrictions — most famously 18-year-old Mark Messier, who began his pro career with Cincinnati in 1978–79 before going on to greatness elsewhere. The franchise also signed Mike Gartner and Mike Liut, building one of the youngest, most talent-stacked rosters in WHA history. When the WHA dissolved in 1979, the Stingers were not among the four franchises absorbed into the major professional hockey league, and the team folded after the merger — though several of its young stars went on to extensive top-tier careers.
