About the Memphis Sounds

The Memphis Sounds are the final chapter of the franchise's three-name Memphis ABA run. After two seasons as the Memphis Tams (1972–1974), the franchise was sold and rebranded as the Memphis Sounds for the 1974–1975 season. The Sounds played one season at the Mid-South Coliseum, with future ABA all-star Larry Finch leading the team. After the season ended, the franchise was sold and relocated to Baltimore as the Hustlers / Claws ahead of the 1975–1976 season — though the Claws folded before the season started, ending the franchise lineage that began as the New Orleans Buccaneers. The Memphis Sounds remain a beloved deep-cut ABA throwback for collectors and Memphis basketball historians.
