Alberta Sports History

Alberta's hockey identity is unmatched outside of Quebec and Ontario. The Edmonton Mercurys, an Edmonton senior team sponsored by the local Mercury car dealership, won the 1950 World Championship and the 1952 Olympic gold medal for Canada — the last Canadian men's hockey gold until Salt Lake City 2002. The Calgary Cowboys (1975–1977) gave Calgary its first major-league pro hockey before the WHA-NHL merger. The Atlanta Flames relocated to Calgary in 1980, becoming the Calgary Flames. The Calgary Rad'z and Edmonton Sled Dogs gave both cities a Roller Hockey International identity in the mid-1990s. Add the WHL Calgary Stampeders, junior and senior hockey heritage, and Alberta's CFL roots, and the province's pro sports story runs as deep as anywhere in Canada.
