About the Louisville Kings
The Kings were one of the franchises that operated in the Continental Football League's later seasons — a minor-pro circuit that ran from 1965 through 1969 with franchises across the Midwest and South, serving as a developmental tier just below the AFL and NFL of the era. Louisville's Kings filled the city's pro football appetite at a time when Kentucky had no NFL team and the University of Louisville's program was still building toward its later national prominence.
Like most COFL franchises, the Kings ran on shoestring budgets, played a mix of former college standouts and NFL washouts, and produced a steady supply of players who would resurface in the NFL, AFL, or CFL after the COFL's collapse. The Continental Football League folded after 1969, and Louisville pro football went dormant until later minor-league revivals — but the Kings remain a beloved cult chapter for Bluegrass State football historians, and Royal Retros throwbacks keep the franchise alive in stitched twill.
