SAN DIEGO TIGERS — WEST COAST NEGRO BASEBALL LEAGUE APPAREL

The San Diego Tigers were one of the founding franchises of the short-lived but historically important West Coast Negro Baseball League, an ambitious attempt to bring organized Negro League–style professional baseball to the West Coast. Based in San Diego, California, the Tigers represented the expansion of Black professional baseball into new western markets during the final years of the Negro Leagues era.

The West Coast Negro Baseball League was organized in 1946, bringing together teams from across California and the Pacific Northwest. The league included the San Diego Tigers alongside clubs such as the Oakland Larks, Portland Rosebuds, San Francisco Sea Lions, Seattle Steelheads, and the Los Angeles White Sox. Although the league operated for only part of a single season before financial challenges forced it to fold, it remains an important chapter in the history of Black baseball and the development of the sport on the West Coast.

The San Diego Tigers were formed to represent one of California’s largest coastal cities and to bring professional Black baseball to Southern California outside of Los Angeles. Like many teams in the league, the Tigers roster included a mix of experienced Negro League players, local talent, and barnstorming professionals who had previously played in independent circuits and winter leagues. Their games helped introduce San Diego fans to the style of play that had made Negro League teams famous throughout the United States.

The team played its home games in the San Diego area during the 1946 season, drawing fans eager to see high-level Black baseball competition. Although the West Coast Negro Baseball League lasted only a few months—from May through mid-summer of 1946—the Tigers and their fellow teams demonstrated that there was real interest in Negro League baseball throughout California and the Pacific Coast.

The San Diego Tigers’ brief existence reflects a transitional moment in baseball history. The same year the league formed, Jackie Robinson was preparing to break the Major League Baseball color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization. Integration would soon transform professional baseball, reducing the need for separate leagues but also bringing an end to many historic Negro League franchises. As a result, teams like the San Diego Tigers represent some of the final efforts to expand Negro League baseball before the sport entered a new era.

Today, the San Diego Tigers remain an important piece of West Coast Black baseball history. Alongside teams such as the Oakland Larks, San Francisco Sea Lions, and Seattle Steelheads, the Tigers helped carry the legacy of Negro League baseball into California and the Pacific Northwest during its final years.
