About the St. Louis Battlehawks

The St. Louis Battlehawks are the attendance story of modern spring football, and so far, that is the whole story. In five seasons across two leagues and multiple ownership groups, they have never played a home date without packing the building, never finished worse than a share of first place in a division, and never once won a championship. They have gone deep into the playoffs three years running — 2024, 2025 and 2026 — and been eliminated each time. No other market gave a spring football league this much this fast, and none of the other seven original XFL cities came close to matching it once the novelty wore off. 2020 — Born Into a Football Vacuum

The Rams left St. Louis for Los Angeles after the 2015 season, and The Dome at America's Center — built in 1995 specifically to keep an NFL team in the city, previously known as the Trans World Dome and the Edward Jones Dome — sat without a full-time football tenant for four years. On the field, McCarron and Becht's team went 7–3 and finished first in the XFL Conference, then lost the conference championship game to the San Antonio Brahmas, 25–15. San Antonio went on to lose the inaugural UFL championship game to the Birmingham Stallions, 25–0. St. Louis had set an attendance record and finished as conference runner-up in the same season, for the second year running.

2025 — The Best Record in Team History, and the Same Ending

The 2025 Battlehawks were the best team the franchise has fielded. They finished the regular season 8–2, the best record in the UFL and the best in team history, closing on a six-game winning streak. Their home opener drew 32,115 fans, and the team averaged 29,500 a game across the season — more than double the next-closest UFL franchise, the DC Defenders, who averaged roughly 13,000. St. Louis hosted its second consecutive conference championship game, this time against the Defenders. DC won, 36–18, and went on to beat Michigan 58–34 for the 2025 UFL title. The best regular season in Battlehawks history ended exactly like the one before it: a home date, a loss, and a full building anyway.

2026 — Ricky Proehl, a Rebuilt League, and a Third Straight Fall Short

Anthony Becht left after the 2025 season to become head coach of the expansion Orlando Storm, and the Battlehawks turned to longtime NFL receiver Ricky Proehl for his first season in 2026. The league itself changed shape around him — three franchises gone, three expansion teams added in Columbus, Louisville and Orlando, conferences eliminated, and rules rewritten to force more offense. St. Louis opened at home with 31,191 fans and a 16–10 win over the defending-champion DC Defenders, then beat the Birmingham Stallions 34–30 in a Week 3 shootout. A road loss to DC in Week 4 and a Week 8 home upset to the Houston Gamblers were the only real setbacks; St. Louis avenged the Gamblers loss the following week and beat the expansion Louisville Kings 16–3 on the road in Week 6. The Battlehawks finished 6–4, good for second in the league and a third consecutive playoff berth, then hosted Louisville again — this time in the UFL semifinal on June 7, 2026. The Kings got their revenge, 29–20, and went on to beat the Defenders 27–20 for the UFL championship six days later, on June 13, 2026. St. Louis was the best-attended team in the league for a sixth straight season and is still looking for its first playoff win.
