About Women's Basketball History

Women's professional basketball has roots that go back nearly a century before the modern professional era. From the barnstorming All-American Red Heads tour squad of the 1930s and beyond, to the short-lived Women's Professional Basketball League (WBL) of 1978–1981, to the American Basketball League (ABL) of 1996–1998, the path to today's professional women's hoops scene is dotted with pioneering franchises and players whose stories deserve to be remembered.

The WBL is particularly significant in this history. Launched in 1978 — nearly two decades before today's most prominent women's pro league — the WBL fielded teams in major markets including New York, Chicago, Houston, Iowa, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Minnesota, San Francisco and beyond. Stars like Ann Meyers (the first woman ever signed to an NBA contract), Nancy Lieberman, Carol Blazejowski and Molly Bolin laid the foundation for everything that came next. The league folded in 1981 due to financial troubles, but it proved that women's pro basketball could draw fans, attract television interest and develop top-flight talent.
