About the Baltimore Elite Giants

The Baltimore Elite Giants were a (second) Negro National League franchise that played in Baltimore from 1938 through 1948 (and continued in successor leagues through 1951). The franchise originated as the Nashville Elite Giants in 1934, moved through several cities, and settled in Baltimore for the 1938 season. The Elite Giants are most historically significant as the franchise that developed Roy Campanella — Hall of Fame catcher, three-time NL MVP with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1951, 1953, 1955) — who began his professional baseball career with the Elite Giants in 1937 at age 15.

After Major League Baseball's December 16, 2020 reclassification of the seven Negro Leagues operating between 1920 and 1948 as major leagues, every NLB-era player from this franchise is now an MLB-recognized major leaguer.
