About the Memphis Pros
The Memphis Pros are the first of three Memphis ABA franchise identities. The franchise originated in New Orleans as the Buccaneers (1967–1970), then relocated to Memphis as the Pros for the 1970–1971 season, playing at the Mid-South Coliseum. The Pros featured former NBA talent and competed in the ABA's Western Division through two challenging seasons before being sold to a new ownership group that renamed the franchise the Memphis Tams for the 1972–1973 season — with Charlie Finley (Oakland A's owner) in the mix as one of the team's investors. After two seasons as the Tams, the franchise rebranded again as the Memphis Sounds (1974–1975) before the franchise was sold and relocated to become the Baltimore Hustlers / Baltimore Claws ahead of the 1975–1976 season — though the Claws folded before the season started. The Memphis Pros era is the cleanest of the franchise's three Memphis identities and remains a beloved deep-cut ABA throwback for collectors.
For the franchise's other Memphis eras, see the Memphis Tams and Memphis Sounds collections. The franchise's later Baltimore identity is at Baltimore Hustlers / Claws. The franchise originated as the New Orleans Buccaneers. For more ABA franchise pages, see the ABA hub.
