The Memphis franchise in the ABA began as the New Orleans Buccaneers in the league's first year. In 1970, they became the Memphis Pros. After two seasons of struggling attendance, the Pros were sold to Charles O. Finley — owner of baseball's Oakland A's and hockey's California Golden Seals — who promptly rebranded the team as the Memphis Tams for 1972–73. Notable players across the Memphis era included Roger Brown (Hall of Fame), Mel Daniels (Hall of Fame), George Thompson, Freddie Lewis, and Chuck Williams.
