About the New Orleans Buccaneers
The Buccaneers were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in 1967, owned by Morton Downey Jr. (yes, the future tabloid TV host) and Sean Downey, and coached by Babe McCarthy — the former Mississippi State coach famous for inventing what became known as the matchup zone. The Buccaneers played at the Loyola Field House and built around player-coach Doug Moe, scorer Larry Brown, and high-flying center Jimmy Jones.
The 1967–68 Buccaneers reached the very first ABA Finals, losing in seven games to the Pittsburgh Pipers — a series that produced two of the great ABA performances ever. New Orleans returned to the playoffs in each of their three seasons, with Hall of Famer Doug Moe averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds in 1968–69. By the 1969–70 season the Buccaneers' attendance was eroding (the Saints had arrived in 1967 and dominated New Orleans sports media) and ownership relocated the franchise to Memphis for 1970–71 as the Memphis Pros. Eventually the franchise became the Memphis Sounds, then the Baltimore Hustlers/Claws — one of the great wandering ABA lineages. The Crescent City wouldn't get pro basketball back until the Jazz arrived from the NBA in 1974.
