About the Memphis Tams
The Memphis Tams are the middle chapter of the franchise's three-name Memphis ABA run. The Tams arrived in 1972 when new ownership (including Oakland Athletics owner Charlie Finley) bought the Memphis Pros and rebranded the team. The name TAMS was an acronym for Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi — the three states the franchise hoped would form its regional fanbase. The Tams played two ABA seasons (1972–1974) at the Mid-South Coliseum, struggling on the court but producing one of the league's most distinctive uniform sets and remaining a beloved cult-favorite franchise among ABA collectors. After the 1973–1974 season, the franchise was sold and rebranded again as the Memphis Sounds. The Memphis Tams remain one of pro basketball's most distinctive deep cuts.
For the franchise's other Memphis eras, see the Memphis Pros (the franchise's first Memphis identity) and Memphis Sounds (the franchise's final Memphis identity) collections. The franchise's later Baltimore identity is at Baltimore Hustlers / Claws. For more ABA franchise pages, see the ABA hub.
