About the Baltimore Hustlers / Claws

The Memphis Sounds were sold to a Baltimore ownership group ahead of the 1975–76 ABA season and rebranded as the Baltimore Hustlers — a name almost immediately rejected by the league as too risque. The team was hastily renamed the Baltimore Claws in late summer 1975, with plans to play at the Civic Center. Coached by Joe Mullaney, the roster included Dan Issel briefly (he was traded to Kentucky before the season started) and a hodgepodge of late-career ABA veterans.

The franchise's collapse was breathtakingly fast. Three preseason games in, ownership defaulted on payments, the league seized control, players went unpaid, and the league folded the franchise on October 20, 1975 — before the regular season even began. The Hustlers/Claws never played a single regular-season game. Just months later the ABA-NBA merger ended the league entirely. The Claws are the shortest-lived franchise in major American pro sports history, and their throwbacks have grown into one of the most coveted obscure-league collectibles around.
