After a dismal first season as the relocated continuation of the 1998–2009 Detroit Shock — a franchise that had won three WNBA championships in Detroit (2003, 2006, 2008) — the team hired pro legend Bill Laimbeer to run the club. The plan worked, but Laimbeer resigned in 2009 and the team subsequently hit the skids.

The Shock relocated to Tulsa, but unfortunately that was not OK with the team's four top stars, who didn't make the move. In 2016, the team relocated again and became the Dallas Wings — continuing in the WNBA under that successor identity in the Dallas–Fort Worth market. Detroit is set to get a new WNBA franchise in 2029.
