The Stars were the rebranded continuation of the St. Louis Giants. After the Giants played a seven-game exhibition series against the crosstown Cardinals in 1921, new ownership took over and renamed the team the Stars for 1922 — joining the first iteration of the Negro National League in the NLB era with a newly built stadium.

With multiple Hall of Famers, the Stars won three championships in the final four years before the league folded. Hall of Fame players included Oscar Charleston, Cool Papa Bell, Mule Suttles, and Willie Wells.
