The San Diego Mariners were the relocated Jersey Knights, moved cross-country for the 1974–75 season after the Cherry Hill chapter ended. Joining the World Hockey Association (WHA) at the San Diego Sports Arena, the Mariners gave Southern California a major-league professional hockey team and built one of the WHA's strongest gate attractions in their inaugural campaign.

Anchored by player-coach Harry Howell and stars like Andre Lacroix (who joined for the franchise's later seasons) and goaltender Joe Daley, the Mariners made the playoffs in all three of their San Diego seasons and were known for one of the WHA's most distinctive teal, orange, and yellow color schemes. Financial pressures and arena conflicts forced the Mariners to fold after the 1976–77 season — ending the four-city, five-year journey of one of the most well-traveled franchises in major-league professional hockey history.
