The Salt Lake Trappers were one of the most famous independent clubs in minor league baseball history — an unaffiliated Pioneer League team that played at Derks Field from 1985 to 1992 with no big-league parent to feed it talent. In 1987 the Trappers reeled off 29 consecutive wins, the longest winning streak in the history of professional baseball, surpassing the 1916 New York Giants' 26-game mark.

Backed by an ownership group that famously included actor Bill Murray, the Trappers won four Pioneer League championships (1985, 1986, 1987 and 1991) and proved an independent franchise could thrive on its own terms. Memorabilia from the record-setting 1987 squad is preserved at the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
