The Portland Pirates played 23 seasons of professional minor-league hockey in Maine from 1993 to 2016, capturing the Calder Cup as Minor League Hockey champions in their inaugural 1993–94 season — one of the most successful franchise debuts in the league's history. The Pirates played at the Cumberland County Civic Center (later renamed Cross Insurance Arena) and built one of the most loyal minor-pro hockey followings in New England.

Across more than two decades in Portland, the Pirates served as a development affiliate for several major professional hockey league organizations, producing a long pipeline of players who went on to top-tier careers. The pirate-ship-themed identity and the Maine coastal setting made the Pirates one of the most beloved minor-pro identities of the 1990s, 2000s, and early 2010s. The franchise relocated to Springfield, Massachusetts after the 2015–16 season, ending Portland's long professional hockey chapter.
