The Pittsburgh Spirit were charter members of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) in 1978. They sat out the league's second season but returned in 1980 and played through 1986 in the Civic Arena.
The Spirit posted a winning record over their existence and made two playoff appearances before the franchise folded after the 1985–86 season.
