Known to fans as The Pels, New Orleans began play in the late 1800s and competed on and off until joining the Southern Association in 1901 — becoming one of the most durable clubs in the minor leagues. The team won three consecutive league championships from 1932 to 1934, and in 1933 and 1934 also took the Dixie Series against the champions of the Texas League.

The club was sold and moved in 1960, shortly before the league itself folded. In 1977 a new team revived the Pelicans name for a single season at the Superdome. Notable players included Shoeless Joe Jackson, Dazzy Vance, Joe Sewell, Bob Lemon, Earl Weaver, and Tony La Russa.
