With a Reggie White-led defense, the Memphis Showboats were consistently at the top of the USFL in attendance. This home field advantage even led to the Showboats hosting a 1985 playoff game in which they should have been the road team. The league believed it would look better to have a full stadium on national TV. The Showboats success led to an expansion bid in the established league for a team called the Memphis Hound Dogs. The city lost out to Charlotte and Jacksonville. The group behind the expansion bid accepted a spot in the Canadian league as the Memphis Mad Dogs, In 2022, a new Memphis Showboats team joined the new USFL, now part of the UFL.
