The Houston Colt .45s were one of two National League expansion franchises to debut in 1962, playing three seasons at the open-air, mosquito-plagued Colt Stadium before moving next door into the Astrodome. The name came from the Colt revolver, and the uniforms carried a smoking pistol across the chest — one of the boldest marks of the era and a favorite among major league collectors.

The 1963 club famously fielded an all-rookie lineup, and the roster that came through Houston in those years included future Hall of Famer Joe Morgan and fan favorite Rusty Staub. The Colt .45s name was retired after the 1964 season when the franchise became the Houston Astros.
