Founded in Homestead, Pennsylvania as a semi-pro team of steelworkers, the Grays quickly outgrew their small town. They ultimately split time between neighboring Pittsburgh and Washington, DC in order to accommodate the large crowds they often drew. During their fifty years of existence, they were one of the most popular and successful clubs in the NLB.

Powered by all-time greats like Cool Papa Bell and Josh Gibson, the Grays won 11 league titles and three Negro World Series. Hall of Fame players included Cool Papa Bell (#18), Ray Brown, Oscar Charleston, Martín Dihigo, Bill Foster, Josh Gibson (#20), Judy Johnson (#35), Buck Leonard (#32), Willie Wells, Smokey Joe Williams, Jud Wilson (#8), and Cum Posey (player/manager/owner).
