The Arena Football League (AFL) was the longest-running and most successful indoor professional football league in American sports history. Founded in 1987 by Jim Foster, the AFL launched with four charter franchises — Denver Dynamite, Pittsburgh Gladiators, Chicago Bruisers, and Washington Commandos — and grew to become a national league across two distinct eras separated by a 2009 hiatus.

The league's original era ran from 1987 through 2008, peaking in the early 2000s with high-profile franchises in Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Philadelphia, San Jose, Orlando, and Tampa Bay. After a one-year hiatus in 2009, the league returned in 2010 and ran through 2019 before folding for good. Across its 32 seasons, the AFL crowned multiple dynasties — the Detroit Drive of the early years, the Tampa Bay Storm, the San Jose SaberCats, the Orlando Predators, and the Philadelphia Soul — and gave many football markets across North America their only professional indoor football franchise.
