What Was the XFL?
The XFL has had three distinct lives, each pushing the boundaries of professional football. Founded by Vince McMahon and NBC in 2001, the original XFL blended football with entertainment in a way no league had before. The XFL was revived in 2020 under new ownership with a serious football product that drew strong ratings before being shut down by COVID-19. A third iteration launched in 2023 under ownership including Dwayne Johnson, ultimately merging with the USFL to form the UFL in 2024.
