Upstate New York Sports History

Upstate New York is one of the most overlooked pro sports regions in the country. The Rochester Royals were one of the NBA's founding-era powerhouses, winning the 1951 NBA championship before relocating to Cincinnati, then Kansas City and Omaha, and ultimately Sacramento — making them the great-grandfather of the current Sacramento Kings. The Syracuse Nationals won the 1955 NBA championship with Dolph Schayes leading the way before relocating to Philadelphia and becoming the 76ers. The Newark Eagles won the 1946 Negro World Series with Larry Doby and Monte Irvin (both future MLB stars and Hall of Famers). The Buffalo AAFC Bisons gave Buffalo pro football in the All-America Football Conference (1946–1949).
